Primary School Lockers
Budgets! Lesson plans! Parents evening! Fire inspection! OFSTED visit! PTA meeting! With so many things to think about and so little time to get it all done storage for pupil belongings can seem like the last thing you need to be worrying about.
However, if your school uses coat pegs to store pupil coats and bags, storage could be having a bigger impact than you think on your space, time and resource and it may surprise you to know it can even have a detrimental impact on your fire inspection.
Although coat pegs are a popular and widely used storage option in primary schools across the UK, they actually create several issues, including:
Clutter and trip hazards caused by coats and bags falling onto the floor mean that fire inspectors and even insurance companies are insisting that coat pegs cannot be located along exit routes
Issues of lost property and damaged belongings takes up precious time for both pupils, parents and teachers
Access to belongings at key times of the day including break and lunch time are creating bottle necks and traffic flow issues which in turn bring risks of accidents and damage, especially in the primary school environment where the difference in size between pupils is so great
Coat pegs simply take up space and aren’t the most efficient way of storing pupil belongings. This may come as a surprise to you given the size of a coat peg compared to a locker but you can actually fit more locker compartments into the same and often less space than you can coat pegs, meaning you can accommodate storage for more pupils with lockers than pegs.
With 240,000 additional primary school places required by 2015 a dedicated cloakroom is no longer always practical. Lockers allow you to locate storage along corridors freeing up space for additional classrooms or break out areas
A recent study by architects Nightingale Associates and Salford University, has shown that classroom design can improve a pupil’s academic progress by as much as 25% over the course of a year. The study highlighted that flexible storage and use of colour are key factors. With classes taking places in school halls, communal areas and even large corridors, carrying colour and organised storage throughout the entire school has never been more important. Lockers not only provide clutter free streamlined storage they also help to create colourful and engaging learning environments.
A cluttered environment leads to a cluttered mind, so by removing the white noise that is a mass of coats and bags you are ensuring students can keep their minds focused.
Lockers are also far better value for money than you may think and there are options available including leasing lockers over a fixed term using your revenue budget or buying the lockers up front using your capital budget.

"The children have been very enthusiastic with their lockers. We haven't had to number them, as each child has instantly taken ownership of his or her locker and loves using them. A great result all round."
David How, Headmaster,
Beaver Road Primary School
"Link Lockers were very good from start to finish. We were clear about what we wanted as it had to fit into the school scheme, but there were a lot of different options and pricing structures.
The lockers are very sturdy and are properly fitted to the walls so they remain in place, and come with a good guarantee,
The children absolutely love them and the school governors, who had to approve the expenditure, are also very happy with them. This was a long-term purchase and we had to get it right."
Joanne Jones, School Business Manager
Moorefield Primary School
"The lockers have been a real hit with the pupils and staff. The result has been dramatic, with no trip hazards from coats and bags on the floor and there has already been a reduction in lost property. I shall certainly mention what a difference it has made to our school, when I attend meetings with other Heads."
Cathryn Downing, Headteacher
Stamford Park Junior School
"They look very attractive and brightly coloured. The children enjoy using them and classrooms are much tidier."
Mr Williams, Headteacher
St Joseph's Catholic Primary School
